Drain Cleaning in Prairie Village, KS

A slow sink is annoying; a floor drain bubbling up in a finished basement is an emergency. We clear kitchen, bathroom, laundry, floor and main sewer drains in Prairie Village and the surrounding Johnson County cities, and we tell you why it clogged so it doesn’t keep happening.

Signs you need a drain cleaned

  • Water draining slowly from a sink, tub or shower
  • Gurgling toilets or drains, especially when another fixture is used
  • Water coming up through the basement floor drain when the washer drains
  • Sewage odor from drains
  • Several fixtures backing up at once (that points to the main line)

Fixture drains vs. the main line

Fixture drains (one sink, one tub) are usually hair, soap, grease or food buildup in the trap or the first few feet of pipe. Main line blockages affect the lowest fixtures first. In older neighborhoods the usual causes are tree roots entering joints in older sewer pipe, grease buildup, sagging sections (“bellies”) that collect solids, or a collapsed or offset joint.

Johnson County Wastewater makes the same distinction: a backup in a drain above the lowest level is typically an internal clog, while backups in the main drain or several fixtures at once may be a sewer backup. Source: JCW FAQ.

When cleaning isn’t enough

If roots come back on the cable, or the line clogs again within months, the pipe itself is usually the problem. JCW notes that roots enter laterals through small cracks and breaks from age and soil compaction, and recommends a camera inspection to determine the lateral’s condition. Repairs range from a spot repair to full replacement, and JCW also describes cured-in-place lining for lines that are intact enough. See sewer line repair and sewer camera inspection.

What affects cost

  • Which drain and how it’s accessed (cleanout, roof vent, pulled toilet)
  • Length and condition of the line
  • The type of blockage (grease, roots, foreign object)
  • Whether a camera inspection is needed to confirm the line is clear

Local notes

  • Who owns the sewer line: in the Johnson County Wastewater service area, the line from your house to the public main (including the connection at the main) is the homeowner’s to maintain. JCW doesn’t repair private service lines. Source.
  • No sump pumps into the sewer: JCW prohibits connecting sump pumps or other groundwater sources to the sanitary sewer (Resolution WD 92-22), because it can overload the system and back up basements. Source.
  • Older homes: Prairie Village’s median year built is 1959, and Mission Hills’ is 1953 (Census ACS 2020–2024), so many main lines here are decades old.
  • Permits: Prairie Village doesn’t require a permit for clearing stoppages; its code treats clearing stoppages and repairing leaks as exempt work. Replacing a section of drain pipe is new work and needs a permit. Source.

Drain Cleaning: common questions

Why does my basement floor drain back up when I run the washer?

Usually because the main line out of the house is partly blocked, often by roots, grease or a sag, and the floor drain is the lowest opening. Johnson County Wastewater notes that a backup in the main drain, or in several fixtures at once, may be a sewer backup rather than a single clog.

Is it a clog in my house or a problem with the public sewer?

Johnson County Wastewater says a backup in a drain that isn't on the lowest level is typically an internal clog a plumber can fix. If the lowest drains or many fixtures back up together, call a plumber or JCW's backup line (913-715-8600) to help sort it out.

Should I use chemical drain cleaner?

We don't recommend it for slow drains. Caustic cleaners rarely clear the real blockage in a main line, they can damage old pipe and chrome traps, and they make the job hazardous for whoever opens the drain next.

Do I need a camera inspection after drain cleaning?

Not always. If a main line keeps clogging, or the cable comes back with roots, a sewer camera inspection shows whether there's a break, offset joint or belly that will keep causing trouble.
